Basic intro to the thyroid

What is it?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck - below the adam's apple.

What does it do?

It produces two types of hormones T4 and T3. These control the metabolism and regulate a number of bodily functions.

When it doesn't function properly...

In the case of hypothyroidism (under-active), there are many, many symptoms. Weight gain, fatigue, intolerance to the cold, depression - to name just a few!

About me

Whilst hypothyroidism is generally diagnosed in people in their 40s (mainly women) I discovered my lack of thyroid function at the age of 27. Six years later, I don’t feel much wiser on this condition which dominates my life on a daily basis.

I don’t know anyone else with the disorder, particularly my age, and finding the best advice for coping with the disorder to be confusing and generally frustrating. Most blogs and information found online tend to be US based. And while this is obviously still useful, not everything is relevant when you’re based in the UK.

Enter ‘Never Mind the Thyroid’! A blog which will hopefully increase my knowledge of hypothyroidism and how to manage it, while reaching out to other sufferers/warriors/patients (whatever you call yourself).
